Style
Style is another of those general and vague words, but necessary, as it is the combination
of the various qualities of a piece of music that makes it distinctive.
One style may have simple harmonies, another jagged rhythms, another flowing melodies.
One may pay practically no attention to tone color, while another may show a preference for a
certain type of tone color. Another may concentrate on a particular type of form.
For example, bebop is a type of jazz characterized by rapid, complex improvised melodies,
unusual chord changes, and energetic drumming. A chant is a usually unharmonized short,
sacred song with a free, unmetered melody.
